Cambourne Rugby makes it to Cambridgeshire Cup Finals Day

Cambourne traveled to Sawston Rugby Club to play in the semi finals of the Cambridgeshire Plate Competition.

Both teams faced off with monstrously large packs, this was going to be a hard game. The game started with Cambourne dominating most of the possession and territory, most of the defending was done in the Sawston half. Cambourne’s pack commanded by Chris Wallis hammered Sawstons defence again and again, and finally their efforts were rewarded with Clive Lees bulldozing his way across the line. Lee Cooke converted the kick. Sawston hit back immediately scoring in the corner, catching Cambourne somewhat asleep. This left their 10 with a very difficult kick, which to everyone surprise he scored. The score brought Cambourne back to their senses, Ben Yeats and Brandon Rennie made their presence felt with strong ball carrying, crashing through their defence on more than one occasion, making some hard yards.

Some skilful play and quick thinking from both Chris Wallis and Harry Mills at 9 and 10 saw the try of the match. Wallis drew two players, dummied a third, popped the ball and Mills sliced the defence in two running at the gap scoring next to the post, giving Cooke an easy conversion. Shortly after this a penalty was awarded to Sawston on the Cambourne five metre line. Sawston took this quickly and despite Lee Cooke’s dogged defence Sawston managed to score. Cambourne’s Captain, Ryan Cox, stepped up and lead by example linking up with Josh Cox, Edd Smith and Nic Seal, and between the 4 of them covered most of the length of the pitch ending in a captains swan dive between the posts.

After a massively impressive game the score ended in a draw, Sawston 21 v Cambourne 21. However Cambourne had beaton Sawston in the first round of the competition so on points go through with a massive 56 v 26 score.

Man of the Match was Ben Yeats for his Herculean ball carries.
